Our Mission
Make Good is focused on creating a more equitable society by providing real-time impact to the most vulnerable and underserved children and youth in Los Angeles. We believe being literate goes beyond words and books. It includes financial and nutritional literacy, social and emotional intelligence and having one’s needs met with dignity and respect. Without all of these skills in place it is an enormous challenge to reach one’s potential. Through our signature programs: The Book Foundation and the TAY Shop at The Emporium: Foster Resource & Literacy Center, we offer targeted programs to those most at risk of falling behind. We avoid duplication of effort and provide deeply enriching programs by partnering with ‘best-in-class’ organizations to effect positive and lasting change.
Message from Board Chair, Julie Liker:
As we begin 2025, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that Los Angeles is facing an incomprehensible time brought about by the devastating wildfires. As you know, the fires have wreaked havoc on our communities, displaced families, destroyed homes, and have left a trail of destruction that will take years to rebuild and for us to heal. At Make Good we are stepping up to help our neighbors and community in a greater way and because of all of you we are up the to the task.
2024 was a year filled with tremendous growth as we were able to open our doors to those amongst the neediest communities in Los Angeles. In 2024 we gave away over 35,000 brand new books, built 5 new Book Nooks, bringing our total 21 and counting. We hosted 14 pop-up shopping events where we distributed brand new clothing and essentials to more than 2,000 former foster and system impacted youth. We grew our number of Life Literacy Workshops where we focus on such topics as mindfulness and financial literacy and had our first All Day Wellness Workshop. I am especially excited to announce that in 2024 we launched our KICKSTART COLLEGE & CAREER program for community college bound students providing them with the technology and tools needed to be successful in their programs, as well as backpacks, clothing, school supplies and more. And we already have plans in place to grow the program in 2025.
I would like to thank our administrative staff for the effort they put in to making sure that we’re able to serve our community. I would also like to thank our board members for their dedication, and our volunteers who take the time to help Make Good thrive and in turn make a huge difference in the lives of our deserving young people.
Lastly, I want to thank our incredibly generous donors for being a vital part of our journey. Your support empowers us every day, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment to Make Good. We look forward to the exciting possibilities this year holds, knowing that with you by our side, we can accomplish so much more.
I am so proud to have the honor of being Make Good’s Chair of the Board. When I think about the growth we’ve experienced in 2024 and how many more people in our community we have reached it gives me a great sense of pride and joy. I hope that, despite where our city stands today, you have a healthy and joyous 2025. More than ever, it is time to count our blessings and wrap our arms around our neighbors in need.
Sincerely,
Julie Liker
